The following article is a an excerpt from my book "The Occult Labyrinth":

In the monotheistic religions, we acknowledge a system adopted from two original texts: the Heavenly Hierarchies by Dionysius, and the Summa Theologica by Thomas of Aquino. According to this system, there are nine celestial orders, circling around a celestial core that is God. The nine celestial orders can be divided into three triads: the Highest Triad, containing Serafs [1], Cherubs [2] and Thrones [3], the Medium Triad, containing Dominions [4], Virtues [5], and Powers [6], and the lowest choirs of the Celestial Intelligences, the Lowest Triad, containing Principalities [7], Archangels [8] and Angels [9]. Those of the Highest Triad (Serafs, Cherubs and Thrones) dwell eternally in the presence of God, and cleave to Him. They are the most exalted of the Hierarchies and are immediately about God and nearest to Him above all others. Therefore they receive the First Light, which is the unfiltered Holy Light of the Godhead. The next triad (Dominions, Virtues and Powers) receive God's Holy Light through the first triad and reflect the Holy Light unto the third triad (Principalities, Archangels and Angels), who reflect the Holy Light unto us, mortals.
