Literature Text

When I was young, I learned to look
to the left,
                                             then to the right,
and finally
to the left again
to verify whether it's safe to cross the street.

But today I stood at the sidewalk and I looked
across the street I had to cross and faced
a girl at the sidewalk on the opposite side.
She looked to the left…
and I looked to the left
and we looked at each other and started walking
as we knew it was safe to cross the street.
In that moment, left was all we needed.
I had this experience moments ago and it occurred to me that really, looking to the left was enough to know we could walk the street. Unconsciously we seem to have relied on each other, which is quite intriguing to me as I don't usually become aware of subtle interactions like these—if these are frequent interactions at all.

Any feedback is welcome; particularly on the formatting of the poem and the use of punctuation.
